Hi! Mister Sam, by Norma G. King Hi! Mister Sam is a delightful human interest story of an old man, a dog, a boy, fishing and friendship – what could be simpler?
Norma King has brought an emotional and fresh approach to children’s writing, with real characters, real circumstances, and everyday problems. Here are some of the comments from students in Grade 5 at Westbourne Grammar School, Geelong, Victoria: … This story made me feel like I shouldn’t just think of myself … … I like how you thought not just two boys the same age being friends but you had an old man and a young boy … the nice thing about this story was that they were always friends even though Jody moved to the countryside … the story showed a great friendship. I really enjoyed it … … I like that, unlike most books, this book is based in Australia … I enjoyed the fact that you put real emotions in the story, for example in some parts it was quite sad and in reality things are not always happy. It was good how you showed the qualities a true friend has … this story is one of the best stories I have read in my whole life … I’ve probably read 1000+ books and your book is in the top 10 books I have read … it’s really great, it makes me want to read it again … I love your story. It was realistic but magical … it was one of those books that makes you want to read more … I really like it because it was realistic. The story was emotional and the language was understandable … I thought your book was a very nice book, as in all the characters used polite language, and I love the way you can make a book so good, without heaps of action and violence … it’s a great book Suitable for upper primary level students, but enjoyed equally by adults.
